Why This Work Matters
Orbital Moonscape reflects Bernie Casey's exploration of abstraction through luminous color, geometric form, and celestial imagery. Concentric circles, intersecting planes, and a tranquil horizon combine to create a composition that balances formal precision with quiet contemplation, revealing Casey's distinctive visual language beyond the careers for which he is more widely known.
Published during the 1970s under the authority of Dr. Samella Lewis, this original vintage offset lithograph preserves Casey's 1969 painting while documenting an important chapter in the history of African American art publishing and the preservation of Black artists' work.
Today, only 70 original impressions will be made available from the Samella Lewis Publishing Archive, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic vintage archive edition.

Publication History
Created in 1969, Orbital Moonscape demonstrates Bernie Casey's mature abstract style through carefully balanced geometry, atmospheric color, and references to celestial space. Originally painted in acrylic on canvas, the composition reflects Casey's sustained interest in rhythm, harmony, meditation, and visual balance.
Published as a vintage offset lithograph during the 1970s under the authority of Dr. Samella Lewis, this edition helped preserve Casey's work through one of the most significant archives devoted to African American art and publishing.
Only 70 original impressions will be released from the Samella Lewis Publishing Archive, making this an increasingly uncommon opportunity for collectors to acquire a vintage edition preserved directly from the historic archive.
About the Artist
Bernie Casey (1939–2017) was an American painter, poet, actor, and former professional football player whose artistic practice remained central throughout his life. While widely recognized for his accomplishments in film and professional sports, Casey developed a sophisticated body of abstract paintings distinguished by geometric structure, luminous color, and contemplative space.
As a founding member of the Los Angeles–based artist collective The Contemporary A Group, Casey helped shape an important chapter in postwar African American art. His paintings continue to receive growing scholarly recognition and are represented in museum and private collections throughout the United States.
