Why This Work Matters
African Series — Series 21 reflects H. Kofi Bailey's remarkable ability to express strength through quiet human experience. Executed in charcoal, the composition captures a deeply personal moment of maternal care, emphasizing dignity, tenderness, and the enduring bonds of family. Bailey's restrained draftsmanship allows emotion to emerge through gesture, form, and subtle expression rather than dramatic narrative.
Published by Contemporary Crafts under the direction of Dr. Samella Lewis as part of the Black Artists on Art publishing program, this original vintage edition preserves the work of an artist whose lifelong commitment to African heritage and the Black experience continues to receive renewed recognition. Bailey studied under influential scholars including Alain Locke and James A. Porter before living and working in Ghana, where Pan-African thought profoundly shaped his artistic vision.
